6 Image Series and How I Crafted Them with Matthias Clamer

presented by Phase One, Digital Transitions (Phase One Partner, LA/NYC) and the Lucie Foundation

Matthias Clamer is a celebrity, entertainment, and portrait photographer known for his creativity and sly wit. His talent lies in producing eye-catching imagery from even the most basic of premises, as well as remaining even keel on set. "I am calm even on the craziest shoot schedules," notes Matthias, who has photographed all manner of rock stars, Hollywood celebrities, business moguls, and comedians, as well as key art for nearly all the major TV studios. Careful research goes into each of his shoots, no matter how famous and seemingly "known" his subject may be. "I learn everything I can about a subject, then let my mind go loose on characteristics that strike me as interesting or possibly visual," says Matthias. "I like to go into shoots with a plan, but the plan is not absolute; it’s a framework that needs furnishing, and even the frame must be allowed to change. Even with a plan, a shoot is dynamic and needs space to breathe, which is the beauty of photography." Matthias’ influences come from all sorts of places, not all of them expected. For a key art and publicity shoot for the FX comedy It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, he was inspired by the black & white angst of Ingmar Bergman films. And for a shoot with the band the Killers, he came up with a scenario in which they were being arrested—"because renting cop cars and police uniforms is fun." "To me, playfulness is key," Matthias says. "When it’s too serious, it becomes predictable, and that’s when it starts to fall flat for me. I like humor, but not the ‘ha, ha, ha’ type. It better be buried and embedded. I love a little surprise."

When the Lights Come on in the City: Night Photography in an Urban Environment with Brian Leary

The sun starts setting earlier with the arrival of autumn. That does not mean that you have to put away your camera! After the sun has set, there are a myriad of photographs waiting for you to capture, all it takes is looking at things a little differently. No matter what time of day or night you are out with your camera, you are only photographing how light is falling on your subject. At night, light is coming from all different directions and in an array of colors. In this informative and easy to follow class, Brian Leary will teach you how to create stunning images at night by just using different types of light present in a city. From the very basics of exposure and how to see different types of light to ways of creating different effects within your images, this class will open up a whole new world of photography for you.

Presenter Bio: For nine months of the year, over the course of more than a decade, Brian Leary funded his severe travel addiction by working behind the counter in camera stores. During this time he has also photographed everything from real estate and weddings to endangered rhinoceroses and the 50th anniversary of the Dalai Lama’s exile from Tibet. The remaining three months were spent wandering the planet, experiencing cultures vastly different from the one he had grown up in. About two years into this work/travel cycle he was asked to teach photography classes and discovered a unique talent for taking complex photographic theories and explaining them in an easy to understand manner. Since then Brian has been getting people excited about photography and helping them along their own photographic journeys.

A Glimpse into the Artful Eye of Fashion Photography with Gregg Cobarr

Photography has always been an important part of presenting the latest designs in the fashion industry. About one hundred years ago, something exciting began happening – a brand new and much more creative way to present fashion through photography. In his presentation, Gregg Cobarr, explores what made those changes in fashion photography so unique. He will also show his own images that depict the art side of his fashion photography and discuss techniques to help enable Photo LA participants to develop a more creative approach to fashion photography. This will include specifics about maximizing your work with models, utilizing the many variables of light – both natural and artificial, as well as emphasizing fashion as one part of the photo, not just the entire visual content. You will come away with a different understanding of what is possible in fashion photography and how rules are made to be broken.

Presenter Bio: Gregg Cobarr is a world-renowned entertainment/celebrity and fashion photographer with over forty years of professional experience. He has worked with clients as Columbia and Epic Records, RCA, Capitol, Universal and Warner Music, 20th Century Fox and Columbia Pictures. His fashion photos have been featured with international fashion designers. Gregg’s work has been published both nationally and internationally in addition to numerous awards for his photography. He has had several exhibitions in Europe and the U.S. and has given Master Classes at International Photo Fairs in Moscow and St. Petersburg, Russia. His photography is in the permanent collections at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art as well as the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Museum. Gregg has a special passion for teaching his techniques.

The Collector's Circle: Getting Your Work Funded with Elisabeth Sunday

Elisabeth Sunday developed a business model designed to support herself as an emerging fine art photographer and she maintains this practice now through mid- career. She calls it, "The Collector's Circle" and it's made up of three tiers: collectors, donors and sponsors. Her business model has successfully funded over two dozen international field expeditions and has allowed her work to be collected by museums across the country. The donor tier of the Collector's Circle offers an affordable alternative for collectors seeking to support an artist through purchases that will later be donated to a museum for tax purposes. These funding techniques provide the quality of long term support that can usher an emerging fine art photographer into the next stage of their career. During the discussion Elisabeth Sunday along with fine art appraiser Stacy Roman will share their knowledge of fundraising and the gifting process. Stacy Roman is a licensed fine art appraiser and is intricately familiar with current tax law and the gifting process.

Presenter Bio: Elisabeth Sunday photographs indigenous peoples from around the world, primarily in Africa. She uses the technique of "Mirror Photography" to create surreal, spiritual and deeply personal collaborations with tribal people. Her work has been widely shown and is in museum collections including the LACMA, The Houston Museum of Art, The Cleveland Museum of Art and the Corcoran Collection.

Portraiture with One Light with George Simian

Photographic portraits are made memorable and compelling by the quality of the light. Join me in this demonstration of how lighting the portrait, with only one strobe light, can dramatically change the experience and emotional message of the image. We’ll work fast, addressing both the effects of the light on the face, and the personal exchange between the subject and the photographer, while displaying every image instantaneously on a large monitor. This image was made during the 2015 Photo LA seminar - come see me make new and surprising images with just one light! George Simian is a commercial photographer, a people person, an advocate for photographers' rights (APA-LA), and an educator (Samy's Photo School, Ubud Bali Photo Workshops), recognized by PDN Magazine as one of the Best Photo Workshop Instructors nationwide.
