FAQs

  • Please browse the reviewer appointments + bios on our website. After payment is accepted, photo l.a. will contact you within 24 hours by email with the Portfolio Reviewer Preference Ranking Form to complete. Space is limited, so register today as appointments will be assigned in order of registration date and when photo l.a. receives your completed Portfolio Reviewer Preference Ranking Form (Form ONLY available for Tier 1 (3) Reviews & Tier 2 (5) Reviews, NOT Single Reviews). Don’t delay! At this time, photo l.a. cannot guarantee your assigned reviews will consist fully of your top reviewer preferences, but we will make every effort possible to give every registrant an opportunity to meet with their top reviewers. Your schedule will be sent to you as your assigned reviews are finalized. Consider spreading your reviews over multiple days to maximize your networking potential – photo l.a. will host the Open Show LA x FOCUS photo l.a. Finalists presentation on Sunday morning at 10am PST and all are welcome to attend. (Open Show LA is a regional organization that offers a platform for visual storytellers to share their projects, to collaborate, and to connect artists, galleries, publishers, and photographic enthusiasts).

  • Inspiration can arrive from the most unexpected people + places and our curated selection of world-renowned fine art photography experts are committed to bringing their years of knowledge to the one-on-one reviewer table with you. Different perspectives and new constructive criticisms are valuable in our fine art careers - photo l.a. fully believes and encourages all our registrants to be open to meeting all reviewers (and vice versa!) who may have a fresh take on your work which could lead to a serendipitous connection or opportunity moving forward.

  • Make your portfolio presentation -

Practice is key to make your 20-minute review appointment as efficient as possible. As time is valuable at a review appointment, it is crucial to be well prepared. Go through presentation practice runs before your review appointment - understand your objectives, sharpen your artist / project statement, take a critical eye to your selected works, and always remember to allow decent time for the reviewer to fully observe your work, critique constructively, and ask pertinent questions as needed. Time it right!

Organize your works for your reviewer, so the conversation flows naturally during your review appointment. Whether you are presenting your works as loose prints in a clamshell box / portfolio case or digital files on a laptop / tablet (make sure it is charged!), be certain that access to the work comes as easy as possible for everyone while a review is in session. As photo l.a. is able to conduct in-person portfolio reviews, a rare occurrence since the pandemic, we highly suggest a physical portfolio to better edit in real-time, especially in terms of sequencing and print quality feedback. A successful portfolio consists of a curated selection of 10-20 exhibition-only prints sized no larger than 20x24 inches. Often the more successful reviews come from at least one (1) cohesive series. Keep it as simple as possible!

Promote yourself with exceptional professionalism. Be on time, ask questions and take notes at every point. We suggest that you consider designing and producing a promotional card with your contact information and highlight image to hand to reviewer and anyone else during session for purposes of networking. A ‘Thank You’ email or message on reviewer’s socials after review will likely be highly appreciated to wrap up your newfound connection. Have a memorable review!

  • All refund requests must be received via focus@photola.com by NOVEMBER 5, 2023 to be valid. A $25 USD administrative fee will be charged for all refund requests - Please choose wisely!

Important note - Registrations are non-transferrable and photo l.a. reserves the right to not honor review appointments exchanged between registrants. No exceptions!

  • We would love to hear from you! Contact us focus@photola.com
